Effective communication

On 16th November 2017, my group, The Solution presented the proposal to improve the energy consumption in Singapore. This presentation gauges my current presentation skill on how well I am capable of explaining the content of the proposal to the audience. It is one of many presentations that I am going to have throughout my university journey. Therefore, I need to assess and reflect on my performance of the presentation to further improve my presentation skill. It is essential to identify the strength of my presentation so that I could maintain the same standard for my future presentations. During my polytechnic days, I learned that it is important to prepare for the presentation. As such, I prepared myself by practising to present in front of the mirror before the actual presentation so that I could to deliver the content to the audience smoothly. Therefore, I feel that investing time and effort to prepare for a presentation benefits me by building confidence in myself to deliver

For the past 12 weeks, I have “learnt, unlearn and relearn” the various communication skills through the Effective Communication module. I felt that the module assignments have helped me to improve my writing and verbal communication skill. First of all, reader response has improved my ‘analysing’ ability and encourage me to think with my own perspective towards an article. Through this assignment, it has taught me to write my own views in regards to respond to the article by gathering reliable sources from other authors view. Furthermore, it polishes my citation and paraphrasing skill. Next, I believe that the technical report is the highlight of this module. It has given my group an opportunity to write a report by identifying a real-life engineering problem. According to the article by Tan (2017), “Floor lights help 'smartphone zombies' keep eye on the road”, Land Transport Authority (LTA) will be implementing a six-month trial project by installing Light-Emitting Diode (LED) strips on the pavement at the crosswalks to improve road safety of the pedestrians. It aims to resolve the hazards caused by the 'smartphone zombies' phenomenon. ‘Smartphone zombies’ refer to people who walk without taking their eyes off their phone. While the implementation of LED strips aims to improve the safety of the pedestrians at crosswalks, it possibly poses potential problems that the article did not address.
